The TGX series covers 322 models. Rated output within it ranges from 265 to 500 kW; the TGX 18.440 sits in the lower part of that range with 324 kW. Its immediate neighbours are the 26.430 6X4 BBS below it with 316 kW and the 22.460 06X02/2 above it with 338 kW. Unladen weight within it ranges from 7,230 to 22,035 kg; here the TGX 18.440 sits at the bottom of that range with 7,700 kg. 5237 MAN models across 68 series are on record.

MAN TGX – long-haul flagship from Munich since 2007, successor to the TGA: type number built from weight class and horsepower, D20/D26/D38 engines, 265 to 500 kW, tractor units up to 49 t

The TGX replaced the TGA in 2007 as MAN's top-of-range long-haul series and is built among other places at the home plant in Munich and at Niepołomice in Poland; a second generation followed in 2020 with a new cab and Euro 6d engines. The type number follows fixed MAN logic: the first two digits name the weight class in tonnes (18, 22, 24, 26, 28), the next three roughly the engine output in horsepower – an 18.440 has around 440 hp. The axle formula (4X2, 6X2, 6X4) describes drive and axle count, BL marks, under MAN's own naming, the construction version, LL the long-haul version, and EEV the voluntary pre-Euro-6 'Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle' emission standard. Engines are MAN's own in-line six- and eight-cylinder D20, D26 and D38 units.

The register lists 322 versions with 265 to 500 kW output, 10,500 to 16,162 cm³ displacement across 6 to 8 cylinders, unladen weights of 7,010 to 22,035 kg and lengths of 5,600 to 12,000 mm; gross weight runs up to 49 t.

As a long-haul tractor unit the TGX competes with the Mercedes-Benz Actros, Scania R/S, Volvo FH and DAF XF; MAN positions it above the lighter TGS series as its flagship for long distances and high mileage in articulated operation.

On used examples, check the condition of the AdBlue/SCR system and exhaust gas recirculation, wear on the TipMatic gearbox and clutch, rust on the frame and cab mounts at high mileage, function of the intarder retarder, and an unbroken service history through MAN's dense workshop network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
