MAN KAT – military all-wheel-drive truck of the KAT 1 family: V8 diesel from 12.7 to 13.4 litres, unladen weight 8.2 to 10.75 tonnes, gross vehicle weight up to 19.1 tonnes
MAN KAT denotes in the register the off-road military trucks of the KAT 1 family, developed from the late 1970s for the German Bundeswehr. Model names such as KAT 4X4 and KAT 1A1 directly confirm the all-wheel-drive construction; the entire range is powered by eight-cylinder diesel engines. MAN was formed in 1908 from the merger of Maschinenfabrik Augsburg with the Nuremberg-based Maschinenbau-Actien-Gesellschaft and was, alongside Rheinmetall and Henschel, one of the manufacturers implementing the KAT 1 programme for the Bundeswehr.

The register lists 5 versions with eight-cylinder engines from 12,675 to 13,383cc displacement, unladen weights from 8,185 to 10,750kg, gross vehicle weights from 14,300 to 19,100kg, lengths from 7,000 to 8,850mm and widths from 2,500 to 2,510mm.
The KAT 1 vehicles served the Bundeswehr as logistics and carrier vehicles in 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 configurations; after decommissioning, many examples found a second life in civilian use, for instance as expedition, forestry and agricultural vehicles, where their off-road capability is valued.
Buying used, check the condition of the portal axles and differential locks, the function of the central tyre-inflation system, the frame for rust, the operating hours of the V8 diesel, and the power take-off and implement couplings; spare parts run less through the regular MAN network and more through dealers specialising in former military vehicles. The condition of the winch, where fitted, and the load bed round off the inspection.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
