Liebherr LTM mobile cranes – from Ehingen, world market leader since the 1980s: the type code 1 plus capacity, axles and generation, from LTM 1025 to LTM 11200-9.1
Liebherr has built mobile cranes since 1969 at its Ehingen plant on the Danube and has been the world's largest maker since the 1980s; the code LTM stands for Liebherr Teleskop-Mobilkran, and the type code is a formula: the leading 1 is a series identifier, the following digits give the maximum capacity in tonnes – LTM 1025 lifts 25 t, LTM 1090 90 t, LTM 1300 300 t, LTM 1500 500 t, LTM 11200 1,200 t. After the hyphen come axle count and generation: LTM 1100-5.2 is a 100-tonner on five axles in the second generation, LTM 11200-9.1 the 1,200-tonner on nine axles, for years the world's strongest telescopic crane. Older models carry the generation suffix as /1 or /2 (LTM 1090/2), L marks the long-boom version; the notes 50M and 84M on the LTM 1500 give the boom length in metres.

The register lists 21 versions with 170 to 507.1 kW from six- and eight-cylinders of 9,960 to 16,162 cm³ – Liebherr's own diesel engines from the Bulle plant – torque from 363 to 3,186 Nm at 1,900 to 2,300 rpm and service weights from 42,000 to 71,750 kg; the twelve-tonne axle load of European roads limits the travel weight, and on the big cranes ballast and boom sections travel separately.
Liebherr's hallmarks are the single-engine drive with mechanical through-drive to the superstructure, the Telematik telescoping system with a single cylinder for all sections and the LICCON control system, which has monitored the crane by computer since 1986.
Used LTMs are the most value-stable cranes on the market; when buying, operating hours for travel and crane duty, the condition of telescopic boom and locking, slew ring, outriggers, ropes and controls and a complete inspection history are what count.
