The Land Rover Discovery, built at the home plant in Solihull since 1989, sits between the more compact Defender and the luxury Range Rover as a family-sized off-roader with a third row of seats. The Discovery I (1989–1998) was followed by the Discovery II (1998–2004) with the new five-cylinder TD5 turbodiesel, the Discovery 3 (2004–2009) with a unitary body on a subframe and the TDV6 six-cylinder plus V8 petrol engines, and the Discovery 4 (2009–2016) with the more efficient SDV6 diesel.
