Land Rover Discovery as a commercial vehicle – the N1 registrations of the off-roader range from 1989 to the Discovery 4: two-seat Commercial and LKW versions, TD5 five-cylinder, TDV6/SDV6 six-cylinder and V8 engines

The Land Rover Discovery, built at the home plant in Solihull since 1989, sits between the more compact Defender and the luxury Range Rover as a family-sized off-roader with a third row of seats. The Discovery I (1989–1998) was followed by the Discovery II (1998–2004) with the new five-cylinder TD5 turbodiesel, the Discovery 3 (2004–2009) with a unitary body on a subframe and the TDV6 six-cylinder plus V8 petrol engines, and the Discovery 4 (2009–2016) with the more efficient SDV6 diesel. This page gathers the models registered as an N1 light commercial vehicle: two-seat Commercial and LKW versions without a rear bench and with blanked side windows in the load area, common in Britain and the Netherlands on company fleets for tax reasons.

The register lists here 87 versions with outputs from 83 to 155 kW, displacements from 2,179 to 4,999 cm³ from four- to eight-cylinders, unladen weights from 1,855 to 2,728 kg, gross weights from 2,720 to 3,310 kg, lengths from 4,450 to 5,140 mm and widths from 1,790 to 2,070 mm.

As a commercial vehicle the Discovery scored with high payload, a strong tow rating and off-road ability, which made it sought after in agriculture, forestry and equestrian use as a tow vehicle, as well as a tax-efficient company car with a van-type registration.

On the Discovery range, rust on the ladder chassis and sills, the condition of the air suspension (Discovery 3/4), injectors and the high-pressure pump on the TD5, the timing chain or belt, transfer case and differentials, and electronic faults all count; parts run through the Land Rover network and a broad specialist market.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.

  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
