LAG 0-3-39 – mega platform semi-trailers from the Dutch manufacturer with more than 75 years of history: three-axle chassis on BPW axles, unladen weight 4,050 to 10,306 kg, gross weight up to 42,000 kg

LAG Trailers is a Dutch manufacturer of heavy semi-trailers with a history of more than 75 years, acquired by the Burg Industries group in 1996 and now building over 2,000 vehicles a year with around 500 employees; the company is credited with building Europe's first aluminium fuel trailer. The type designation 0-3-39 denotes the brand's mega platform semi-trailers on a three-axle chassis with BPW axles. As class O4 trailers they run air brakes with ABS or EBS and are subject to recurring roadworthiness testing; the semi-trailer tractor requires a category CE licence.

The register lists 15 versions here with unladen weights from 4,050 to 10,306 kg and gross weights from 27,000 to 42,000 kg; lengths run from 10,700 to 14,040 mm, widths from 2,460 to 2,600 mm.

As mega platform semi-trailers with large internal height, the 0-3-39 models mainly serve groupage and volume transport in European long-haul traffic, where maximum load volume combined with low tare weight determines economic viability.

On used 0-3-39 semi-trailers, check the condition of the curtain roof and sliding-curtain mechanism, the frame and cross members for corrosion and deformation, the BPW axles and brakes, and the function of the lift axle and stakes; since mega trailers are trimmed for low tare weight, the frame around the axle suspension deserves particular attention. The fixed tridem axle group spreads the load across three axles more evenly than a tandem axle; the 2-inch kingpin is the common standard for the fifth-wheel coupling on these semi-trailers.

What to check before buying

  • Search the frame and welds at the axle mounts — that is where cracks start.
  • Check the brakes and the last inspection in the papers.
  • Work the gross weight against the towing vehicle before buying.
  • Compare the chassis number with the papers.
  • Look at the floor, cover or body from the inside — rust does not show from outside.
