Kia Pregio – the collective page of the Korean compact van, DC and Comfort versions, 2.5 to 2.7 litres of diesel displacement, four-cylinder, 1.6 to 2.1 tonnes unladen weight, around 3.1 tonnes gross weight

Kia, the South Korean car maker founded in 1944, launched the Pregio in 1995 as the successor to the Besta and built it until 2003 as a front-wheel-drive compact van. The model names show the trim levels DC (double cab or Deluxe version), Comfort and Luxe as well as the TCI designation for the turbocharged common-rail diesel; the number 2.5 or 2.7 gives the engine displacement in litres.

The register lists here 9 versions with 2.5 to 2.7 litres of displacement from four-cylinders, unladen weights from 1,620 to 2,130 kg, gross weights from 3,080 to 3,160 kg and widths from 1,810 to 1,820 mm.

The Pregio positioned itself as an affordable alternative to Western European compact vans such as the Ford Transit and Mercedes Vito, finding buyers mainly among trade businesses and small carriers focused on low purchase cost; in Central and Eastern Europe the Pregio stayed on sale longer than in the west of the continent.

On used examples, rust on the sliding door and underbody, the condition of the injection pump and turbocharger on the TCI engines, wear on clutch and brakes and the timing-belt change history and the condition of the sliding-door track and its rollers count; because of the low unit numbers in Western Europe, parts are only available to a limited extent through independent Kia dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
