Kia Carnival 2.9 – Korea's first full-size MPV since 1998 with a 2.9-litre CRDi diesel: 136 kW, 1,840 to 2,189 kg unladen weight, also built as a van

The Kia Carnival was, in 1998, Kia's first standalone full-size MPV and at the same time one of the manufacturer's first global models after the takeover by Hyundai following the Asian financial crisis; in North America the model was sold as the Kia Sedona. The suffix 2.9 in the type designation names the range's 2.9-litre diesel engine, CRDI and HPDI the common-rail or high-pressure injection technology, and VGT the variable-geometry turbocharger; A/T and M/T distinguish automatic and manual gearboxes. Versions marked VAN are commercial variants registered as light goods vehicles.

The register lists 11 versions with a recorded output of 136 kW from four-cylinder diesel engines of 2,900 to 2,902 cm³. Unladen weights range from 1,840 to 2,189 kg, gross weights from 2,545 to 2,920 kg, widths from 1,900 to 1,990 mm.

The Carnival established itself in Europe as an affordable alternative to the VW Sharan and Ford Galaxy and was especially sought after by large families and in commercial passenger transport for its great interior flexibility; the versions registered as commercial vehicles served trades and delivery businesses.

When buying used, what matters on the 2.9-litre diesel is the condition of the turbocharger, injection pump or injectors and the timing belt, and on automatic gearboxes the shift quality. Suspension bushes, brakes and, on commercial versions, the condition of the load area all form part of the check; spare parts run through the Kia dealer network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
