John Deere Milénio – the Brazilian small tractors from Horizontina: Milénio 20A to 100F, the number as hp class, F for orchard, VM and Lombardini engines, 16 to 70 kW

Milénio – Portuguese for millennium – was the name under which John Deere offered a range of small tractors for fruit, wine and vegetable growing in Brazil around the turn of the millennium: built at the Horizontina plant in Rio Grande do Sul, which Deere gained in 1999 with the full takeover of SLC-John Deere, and adapted to the smallholdings of Brazil's South and Northeast. The type logic: the number roughly gives the output in hp – Milénio 20 to Milénio 100 – the letters the version: F for the orchard version (fruteiro) with narrow track and low height, C and A for equipment and track variants, RR for a special version, Q-85 an intermediate type. The engines did not come from Deere but from VM Motori of Italy – recorded in the register as VM Detroit Diesel, from the time when VM belonged to Detroit Diesel – and from Lombardini in the smallest models.

The register lists 11 versions with 16 to 70 kW (22 to 94 hp) – all diesel.

The Milénio show how John Deere served a niche in South America below the Horizontina tractor programme that its own plants did not cover: with bought-in Italian engines and a design for farms that wanted a small tractor with the Deere dealer network.

Used Milénios are common in Brazil, hardly seen outside South America; when buying, engine condition and parts supply for the VM and Lombardini engines, gearbox and front axle and the hydraulics are what count.

  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
