The 5003 series is one of John Deere's more simply equipped ranges, built mainly for markets outside North America and Western Europe, with rugged mechanics and without the comfort electronics of the contemporary European models. The type logic orders the power class in ascending order through the last two digits – the 5103 as the smallest, the 5603 as the strongest model – with A marking the version with an enclosed cab as against the open platform. The engines are Deere's own three- and four-cylinder diesels, the same engine family that also works in the North American and European utility ranges of the period, here tuned more simply.
