John Deere 30 series – the last two-cylinders 330 to 830 (1958–1960), the 435 with Detroit two-stroke and the Mannheim 1130 to 3130 (1972–1975)

As with the 20s, the '30 series' label at John Deere gathers two tractor worlds. The first are the models 330, 430, 530, 630, 730 and 830 of 1958 to 1960 – the last generation of the horizontal two-cylinders from Waterloo, with new sheet metal, improved seats and an angled steering wheel, but the same technology as since 1923. The 435 is the special case of the range: a 430 with the 2-53 two-stroke diesel from General Motors Detroit Diesel, because Deere had no diesel of its own for the small class – and at the same time the first Deere whose PTO output was measured to the new standard. The 440s are the industrial and crawler versions. In 1960 that world ended with the New Generation.

The second group – 1130, 1630, 2130, 3030 and 3130 – came from the Mannheim plant in 1972 to 1975 as 'Generation II' for Europe, with three-, four- and six-cylinder engines, cabs and the suffix (A) for four-wheel drive and LS for the version with a powershift step. In the register the models run from 18.5 to 65.5 kW (27.5 to 70 hp), 1,647 to 7,726 cm³ with two to six cylinders, unladen weights up to 3,561 kg, lengths from 2,915 to 4,140 mm, widths from 1,359 to 2,530 mm and heights from 1,410 to 3,015 mm; fuels range from petrol, all-fuel and LPG on the two-cylinders to diesel on the Mannheim models.

The 30-series two-cylinders are today John Deere's most sought-after collector tractors because they were built for only two years; an 830 Diesel with pony starting engine is regarded as the crown of the range.

On used two-cylinders, originality, compression and the condition of the starting engine or electrics count, on the 435 the availability of Detroit Diesel parts, on the Mannheim models engine, transmission and cab.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
