JI Case two-cylinder range 12-25 and 30-60 – early tractors from Racine, Wisconsin: kerosene/petrol engines of 18.6 to 44.7 kW, 4,080 to 11,702 kg, 365 to 600 rpm
The J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company of Racine, Wisconsin, built a series of heavy two-cylinder tractors in the 1910s and 1920s, of which the register lists here the 12-25 and 30-60 types. As was typical for tractors of that era, the first number in the type designation gives the drawbar horsepower and the second the belt-pulley power; the 30-60 was accordingly built markedly larger and heavier than the 12-25. Both engines ran on the dual-fuel system typical of the period, starting on petrol and running continuously on kerosene.

The register lists here 2 versions with 18.6 to 44.7 kW from two-cylinders of 8,829 cm³ displacement, weights from 4,080 to 11,702 kg, lengths from 3,785 to 5,664 mm, widths from 1,854 to 2,667 mm, heights from 1,930 to 3,200 mm and rated speeds from 365 to 600 rpm.
These early Case tractors belonged to the pioneering era of powered farm machinery in North America, when huge, slow-revving two-cylinder engines with enormous torque replaced the steam plough in fieldwork; their main use was belt-driven threshing and soil cultivation on the large farms of the American Midwest.
Buying one of these rare historic machines, the condition and tightness of the large-displacement two-cylinder engine matter most, along with the condition of the radiator and water pump and rust and cracks in the cast-iron chassis; the huge steel wheels should be checked for deformation. Spare parts can practically only be found through specialist collectors and clubs for historic Case machinery.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
