The 30 series was J.I. Case's tractor programme of the 1960s from Racine, Wisconsin: in 1960 the 430, 530, 630, 730, 830 and 930 appeared to replace the 300 and 400 models, in 1964 the revised 31s (431, 531, 631, 731, 831, 931) and 41s (441, 541, 641, 741, 841, 941) followed with a new bonnet, and the 1031 of 1966 formed the top with over 100 hp. The number logic: the first digit gives the size class, the second the generation within the range – 30 for the original models, 31 and 41 for the second series; GP stands for General Purpose, the row-crop version with adjustable track, Comfort King for the rubber-mounted operator platform offered from 1965.

Case offered every fuel in this period: in the register 13 models run on diesel, six on petrol and five on petrol or LPG – a reflection of American farms where propane was cheaper than diesel in the 1960s. The technical hallmark was the Case-o-matic transmission, a torque-converter drive that appeared in 1957 as one of the first in farm machinery and was offered in the 30s alongside the manual gearbox. Values run from 25.4 to 76.1 kW, 2,419 to 7,391 cm³ with four or six cylinders, unladen weights from 1,415 to 4,234 kg, lengths from 3,302 to 4,191 mm and widths from 1,559 to 2,235 mm.
In 1967 Tenneco took over the company and in 1969 the 70 series followed; the 30s are thus the last pure J.I. Case tractors before the conglomerate era that led to Case IH in 1985.
Used, they are sought-after collector and working tractors in the USA. When buying, the condition of the Case-o-matic (converter and clutches), engine wear on the petrol versions, hydraulics and the completeness of the Comfort King equipment are what count.
