Jeep CJ-5 – the off-roader built 1954 to 1983, basis for numerous Renegade special editions, four- to eight-cylinder, 1,250 to 1,660 kg unladen weight, up to 1,885 kg gross weight

The Jeep CJ-5 is a civilian off-roader that Willys developed from 1954 on the basis of the military M38A1 and that, after takeovers by Kaiser and American Motors, was built almost unchanged in basic concept until 1983 – with a wheelbase of just over two metres, an open body and solid axles at both ends. The models captured in the register, CJ5, CJ5 DIESEL and several Renegade variants, show the special editions popular from the 1970s during the AMC era, with striking paintwork and extended equipment that lifted the CJ-5 from a pure work vehicle to a leisure off-roader.

The register lists here five versions with four to eight cylinders, unladen weights from 1,250 to 1,660 kg and gross weights from 1,650 to 1,885 kg, and widths from 1,550 to 1,780 mm.

For almost three decades the CJ-5 was the most-built model of the classic Jeep CJ range and, as the civilian successor to the wartime jeep, shaped the image of the American off-roader; it was the template for numerous licence-built versions outside the US.

On a used example, check rust on the frame and floor panels, the condition of the soft top or hardtop, wear on the axles and steering, and on the Renegade models the originality of paintwork and trim; parts are available through a broad network of suppliers specialising in the Jeep CJ.
