Iveco Massif – off-road commercial vehicle from a Spanish-Italian collaboration: 3.0-litre four-cylinder engine, 4,750 kg gross weight and 2,770 mm wheelbase

The Iveco Massif arose from a collaboration between Iveco and the Spanish manufacturer Santana Motor of Linares. Since the 1950s Santana had built Land Rover off-roaders under licence and developed its own models from that base; the Massif carried over the rugged ladder-frame chassis of this Spanish off-road tradition and was sold under the Iveco brand with Iveco engines.

For the Massif the register lists a four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 2,998 cc. Kerb weight is 3,155 kg, gross vehicle weight 4,750 kg. The vehicle is 4,700 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and has a wheelbase of 2,770 mm, carried on four wheels.

At 4,750 kg gross weight the Massif falls into EU vehicle class N2 for medium commercial vehicles. The short 2,770 mm wheelbase, combined with a rugged ladder frame and permanent four-wheel drive, makes it an off-road working vehicle, of the kind used by authorities, fire services and companies for work on unpaved terrain.

When buying a used off-roader of this type, check the condition of the transfer case and axles after off-road use, rust on the ladder frame and suspension components, and the seals of doors and floor. Drivetrain parts run through the Iveco dealer network; supply of parts specific to the off-road version is more limited than for mainstream models because of the small numbers built.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
