Iveco Stralis – the long-haul and distribution range 2002–2019: AD rigid chassis and AS/AT tractor unit, Cursor six-cylinder engines, 228 to 419 kW, also as a natural-gas version

The Iveco Stralis was introduced in 2002 as the successor to the EuroTech and EuroStar and built until 2019, when the S-Way took over; Iveco itself was formed in 1975 from the merger of the Fiat, OM, Lancia and Magirus-Deutz commercial-vehicle businesses. The type designation follows a fixed scheme: AD marks the rigid chassis for bodywork, AS and AT the tractor unit, the following number (190, 260, 340, 440 and so on) the weight or power class, the letters P, S and T after the slash the cab height and equipment, and Y and Z the axle configuration. The Stralis is powered by Iveco's own inline six-cylinder Cursor engines; as the Stralis NP there was also a natural-gas-powered variant, likewise recorded in the register.

The register lists here 146 versions, with six-cylinder engines throughout, displacements of 7,790 to 12,900 cm³, outputs of 228 to 419 kW, unladen weights of 6,960 to 20,275 kg and gross weights of 11,999 to 42,000 kg; for part of the models, lengths of 6,070 to 12,490 mm are also recorded.

For a decade and a half the Stralis was the backbone of Iveco's European range in long-haul and distribution transport and a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz Actros, Scania R/P, Volvo FH and DAF XF; with the natural-gas version Iveco positioned itself early as a pioneer of alternative drives in the heavy-truck segment.

On a used example, operating hours and mileage, the condition of the clutch and automated manual gearbox, the AdBlue and exhaust system, on the NP natural-gas models the condition and inspection dates of the gas tanks, and the brakes and tyres of the drive axle all count; parts and service run through the Iveco dealer network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
