Isuzu TFS as a van – the type code of the pick-up before the D-Max: Rodeo generation and first D-Max versions, four-cylinder diesels 2.25 to 3.0 litres, gross weight up to 3.5 tonnes
Isuzu is a Japanese commercial-vehicle and engine maker based in Tokyo that has ranked among the world's largest pick-up builders since the 1980s. TFS is the internal type code under which Isuzu ran the pick-up generation before the D-Max was introduced in 2002, and which stayed in the registers for the first D-Max versions too, as shown by the models TFS 85 D-MAX 4X4 and TFS 86 D-MAX 4X4 in this register. Internationally Isuzu sold the TFS range as the Rodeo, here represented by the TFS 54 RODEO 4X4 and TFS 77 RODEO 4X4 versions; the number sequences 54, 77, 85 and 86 denote engine and body variants within the generation.

The register lists 7 versions in this range with displacements of 2,250 to 2,999 cm³ from four-cylinders, unladen weights of 1,640 to 2,700 kg, gross weights of 2,450 to 3,500 kg and widths of 1,690 to 1,800 mm; one version records 65 kW of power, another a length of 5,000 mm.
As a double-cab pick-up with four-wheel drive, the TFS range sat between a working vehicle and a leisure vehicle and competed with models such as the Toyota Hilux and the Ford Ranger; Isuzu's pick-up engineering of this generation also underpinned badge-engineered versions for other brands in several countries.
When buying used, TFS-range checks include the condition of the ladder frame and rust at the leaf-spring mounting points, the diesel injection depending on model year, the condition of the transfer case and axle drives on four-wheel-drive versions, and rust on the load bed and wheel arches; parts run through the Isuzu dealer network.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
