International Scout – American off-roader from Fort Wayne, Indiana (1961–1980): four- to eight-cylinder engines up to 5,653 cc, 1,462 to 2,300 kg kerb weight, forerunner of the modern SUV
The International Scout was built from 1961 at International Harvester's Fort Wayne, Indiana plant as a compact off-roader and counts among the early forerunners of today's SUV. The Scout 80 was the first generation, followed by the Scout 800 and, from 1971, the Scout II; Terra is the pick-up variant and Traveller the wagon variant of the Scout II, both built from 1976. Depending on the model year the Scout was powered by four-cylinder, straight-six and V8 engines from International Harvester's own engine range.

The register lists 6 versions with four- to eight-cylinder engines up to 5,653 cc, kerb weights of 1,462 to 2,300 kg, gross vehicle weights of 2,050 to 2,812 kg and widths of 1,750 to 1,880 mm.
The Scout competed directly with the Jeep CJ and later the Ford Bronco, and counts as one of the pioneers of the civilian off-road segment in the United States; production ended in 1980 when International Harvester withdrew from the light-vehicle business to concentrate entirely on heavy commercial vehicles and farm equipment. Today the Scout is a sought-after collector's vehicle in American off-roader history.
When buying used, check above all for rust in the floor pan, sills and wheel arches, the condition of the carburettor and ignition on the older engines, the transfer case and axles on 4x4 versions, and parts availability, which today runs mostly through specialist Scout clubs and reproduction-parts suppliers in North America.
