International Harvester SUPER-BW-6 and BWD-6 – the final 1950s update of the W-6 with petrol, distillate or diesel engine, 4,324 cm³ and 37.5 kW

The SUPER series was, in the mid-1950s, the last major update of the International W-6 range before it was replaced by the 06-series types: the SUPER-BW-6 and SUPER-BW-6/BWD-6 build on the proven standard-tread W-6 and were offered with a choice of petrol or distillate (paraffin) carburettor, or as the BWD-6 with a diesel engine. The four-cylinder delivers 37.5 kW at 1,450 rpm from 4,324 cm³ in all fuel versions. Distillate fuel, also known in the United States as Tractor Vaporizing Oil, was a lower-grade, cheaper fuel that required a special carburettor with preheating.

The register lists 2 versions of 37.5 kW from a four-cylinder engine of 4,324 cm³ at 1,450 rpm, torque of 494 Nm, an unladen weight of 2,496 kg, a length of 3,175 mm, a width of 1,765 mm and a height of 1,676 mm.

As a standard-tread tractor with a fixed front axle, the SUPER series was common on large-scale arable farms in North America, competing there with John Deere, Allis-Chalmers and Case; the choice between three fuel types let farms switch to whichever was locally cheapest.

On a used example of these multi-fuel engines, what counts especially is the condition of carburettor or injection pump, the head gasket and cooling system, plus clutch, gearbox and tyres; parts today move through the open vintage market for IH classics.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
