The International Harvester Titan is a tractor from International Harvester. The engine is water-cooled.

International Harvester Titan – early field tractor of the 1910s: twin-cylinder kerosene engine, 25 to 66 hp, low-revving for continuous field work

International Harvester was formed in 1902 from the merger of McCormick, Deering and several smaller farm machinery makers into one of the largest agricultural machinery groups in the United States. The Titan series, alongside the technically related Mogul series, was among the first field tractors built in large numbers anywhere in the world; the two lines ran through separate dealer networks, a legacy of the previously competing brand houses. Titan tractors such as the Titan 10-20 carried horizontal twin-cylinder engines with open cooling and a low running speed, built for rugged continuous field work and fuelled with kerosene rather than petrol.

The register lists here 5 versions with 25 to 66 hp from International twin-cylinder engines that turned at 335 to 575 revolutions per minute.

The Titan series belonged to the first generation of practical field tractors in North America and Europe and, during the First World War, replaced horse teams in many places as draught animals and farm labour grew scarce; sizeable numbers of Titan tractors went to Britain and France.

Surviving examples are collector's items today; what matters is the condition of the open cooling system, the low-tension ignition and the gearbox, plus the completeness of fittings such as the belt pulley and drawbar, since spare parts can now realistically only be sourced through specialist vintage dealers and reproduction parts.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
