The FARMALL-SUPER series from International Harvester includes the SUPER-MD/MDV. Production: 1952–1954. The engine delivers 47 hp (34.6 kW), has 4 cylinders, with a displacement of 4,324 cm³. Torque is 475 Nm. Rated speed is 1,450 rpm. The machine is 3,458 mm long, 2,134 mm wide and 2,007 mm high. The unladen weight is 2,488 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,305 mm. Ground clearance is 580 mm. Top speed is 30 km/h. Transmission: 5 V/1 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 6.00 x 16 (MDV: 6.00 x 20), rear 12 x 38 (MDV: 12.00 x 36). The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 101.6 mm. The stroke is 133.35 mm. The compression ratio is 16.5:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,080 rpm. Construction: semi-frame construction. Around 5.199 (MDV: 89) units were built. The FARMALL-SUPER-Baureihe series covers 9 models. Rated output within it ranges from 19 to 47 hp; the SUPER-MD/MDV sits at the top of that range with 47 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the SUPER-H/HV below it with 32 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 1,082 to 2,488 kg; here the SUPER-MD/MDV sits at the top of that range with 2,488 kg. 391 International Harvester models across 45 series are on record.

International Harvester Farmall Super (1951–1954) – the strengthened letter tractors: Super A, Super C, Super H and Super M, D for diesel, V for the high-clearance version, TA for the Torque Amplifier, distillate

The Super models were International Harvester's answer to post-war competition: from 1951 the Farmall letter tractors A, C, H and M, which had led the American market since 1939, received more displacement and power, hydraulics and the suffix Super. The type logic: the letter orders the size – A the small single-row tractor with offset driver's seat (Culti-Vision), C the two-row, H the medium and M the large row-crop tractor – D marks the diesel (Super MD), V the high-clearance version for sugar cane and vegetables (AV, HV, MV) and TA the Torque Amplifier, the powershift step introduced in 1954 that raised pulling power under load without the driver having to declutch. The fuels reflect the time: most models ran on distillate or kerosene and were started on petrol, the MD models on diesel started on petrol – IH's own solution in which the engine started as a petrol engine and switched to diesel.

The register lists 9 versions with 14 to 34.6 kW from four-cylinders of 1,853 to 4,324 cm³ at rated speeds of 1,400 to 1,650 rpm, torque from 157 to 495 Nm, unladen weights from 1,082 to 2,488 kg, lengths from 2,715 to 3,683 mm and widths from 1,419 to 2,134 mm.

The Super range was the peak of the letter tractors before the 100 series with numbers followed in 1954; the Super M-TA is regarded as the most important post-war Farmall because it brought the powershift principle into farm machinery.

Used Super models are collector and vintage tractors: originality, engine condition, carburettor and changeover mechanism, hydraulics, the Torque Amplifier and sheet metal count; parts are widely available in North America.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
