International Harvester 743 and 743XL – the B family from the Neuss plant: four-cylinder diesel of 3,911 cm³ and 49 kW, unladen weight from 2,880 to 3,260 kg
International Harvester was formed in 1902 in Chicago from the merger of the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and the Deering Harvester Company, and until the merger with Case in 1985 ran its own plant for the European market in Neuss on the Rhine. The 743 range belongs to that plant's mid power class, while the 743XL adds extra equipment on the same drivetrain – a four-cylinder diesel of 3,911 cm³ delivers 49 kW in both cases. After the merger with Case in 1985, the Neuss site remained a plant for combine harvesters, while tractor production moved to other Case IH locations.

The register lists 2 versions of 49 kW from a four-cylinder engine of 3,911 cm³ at 2,300 rpm, unladen weights from 2,880 to 3,260 kg, lengths from 3,730 to 3,770 mm, widths from 2,040 to 2,050 mm and heights from 2,540 to 2,620 mm; torque stands at 225 Nm.
In the mid power class the 743 range competed with Deutz, Fendt, MAN and the group's own American Farmall models; on the European market of the 1970s and 1980s International was common on mixed arable and grassland farms and in agricultural contracting.
On a used example, what counts is the condition of clutch, gearbox and rear axle, tightness of the hydraulics, rust on wings and bonnet, and parts availability, which since the plant's closure runs mainly through independent IH specialists and reproduction parts.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
