International Harvester 84 series (1977–1985) – the last World Wide range from Doncaster: 384 to 884 and Hydro 84, the final digits 84 as series, the first digit as size class

The 84 series was the successor to the 74s and the last tractor range International Harvester built at the British Doncaster plant under its own name – presented in 1977, ended in 1985 with the merger into Case IH, with engines from Neuss and transmissions from Doncaster and Saint-Dizier, as the group's World Wide logic provided. The type logic: the final digits 84 mark the series, the first digit orders the size in ascending order – 384 the small three-cylinder around 36 hp, 484 and 584 the four-cylinders of the mid-range, 684, 784 and 884 the big models up to about 80 hp – Hydro 84 the version with stepless hydrostatic transmission, which remained rare in Europe. The engines are IH's own diesels from Neuss: the three-cylinder D-155 of 2.5 litres and the four-cylinders D-179, D-206 and D-239 of 2.9 to 3.9 litres, plus the D-268 of 4.4 litres in the 884, at 2,100 to 2,400 rpm.

The register lists 7 versions with 26.5 to 58.8 kW from three- and four-cylinders of 2,523 to 4,398 cm³, torque from 161 to 272 Nm, unladen weights from 1,921 to 2,625 kg, lengths from 3,327 to 3,720 mm, widths from 1,692 to 2,680 mm and heights from 1,494 to 2,568 mm.

The 84s were common in Britain, Ireland, Scandinavia and Germany and continued for some years after 1985 as the Case IH 85 series (385 to 885); they are regarded as the most reliable of the late IH tractors.

On used tractors, operating hours, engine condition and injection pump, clutch (dual clutch for the PTO), gearbox and synchromesh, hydraulics and cab count; parts run through Case IH and British IH specialists.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
