Hitachi's mini excavators carry two names marking two eras: EX for the range of the 1990s (EX12-2 to EX45-2) and ZX for the Zaxis generation from 2001, which continues today. The number gives the weight class in hundreds of kilograms – ZX8 about 0.8 t, ZX17 1.7 t, ZX35 3.5 t, ZX60 6 t – U stands for the short-tail version whose upper structure swings within the track width, USB for short tail with dozer blade, and -2, -3 for the generations. The small Zaxis models are built at Hitachi Construction Machinery Tierra in Shiga prefecture, the group's compact-excavator plant, supplemented for Europe by the Amsterdam plant.

The Zaxis minis are known for hydraulics that Hitachi derives from its large excavators – fine interplay of boom, stick and slew – and for cabs that offer the comfort of bigger machines in the 3-tonne class; rental firms and landscapers are the main customers.
