The Hermann Lanz T 318 belongs to the T-Reihe series. Production: 1/1960–1/1960. The engine delivers 18 hp (13.2 kW), has 2 cylinders, with a displacement of 1,400 cm³. Rated speed is 2,000 rpm. The machine is 1,520 mm wide and 1,270 mm high. Top speed is 20 km/h. Transmission: 6V/1R. The engine is air-cooled. Tyres: front 5.00-16, rear 9-24. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 90 mm. The stroke is 110 mm. Around 1 units were built. Rated output across the Hermann Lanz range ranges from 11 to 60 hp; the T 318 sits at the bottom of that range with 18 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the D 416 below it with 16 hp and the D 120 above it with 20 hp. Rated output across the Hermann Lanz range ranges from 8.1 to 43.9 kW; here the T 318 sits at the bottom of that range with 13.2 kW. 48 Hermann Lanz models across 8 series are on record.

Hermann Lanz T 318: air-cooled two-cylinder diesel tractor with 1,400 cc and 13.2 kW from the T series programme, January 1960

Hermann Lanz of Aalen, independent of Heinrich Lanz AG in Mannheim, supplemented its mostly water-cooled range with an air-cooled version in the T series. The T 318 was among this air-cooled line. Such air-cooled versions supplemented the range with a lower-maintenance alternative for farms without regular coolant checks.

The T 318 is powered by an air-cooled two-cylinder engine of 1,400 cc, producing 18 hp, or 13.2 kW, at 2,000 rpm. At a height of 1,270 mm and a width of 1,520 mm, the machine reaches a top speed of 20 km/h.

Air cooling made the engine more resistant to frost and did away with coolant, a radiator and a water pump as possible sources of wear and leaks; in exchange, cooling performance under sustained full load is lower than with a water-cooled unit. A two-cylinder engine of this size was built for light field work on smaller farms. Its simpler cooling system also meant one less fluid circuit to maintain over a long working life.

When buying, the condition of the cooling fins on the cylinder block and the cooling fan matters, since dirt or damage there leads directly to overheating. Also worth checking are the injection pump and injectors, the gearbox and the brakes; spare parts for this small and now rare manufacturer are only available through a specialist circle of collectors. Hoses and seals around the fuel system are also worth checking for age-related hardening.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
