The Heinrich Lanz D 2016 is a tractor from Heinrich Lanz.

At 18 km/h, that is as fast as it goes. It measures 2.77 m in length, 1.67 m in width and 2.27 m in height. Empty, it weighs 1,440 kg.

Heinrich Lanz – other models: the collective page of the Mannheim Bulldog tractors with hot-bulb and diesel engines, petrol to crude oil and gas oil, 16.1 to 18.3 kW, 1,190 to 3,950 kg

This page gathers the Heinrich Lanz tractors the register could not assign to a named range – from early types such as the FMA/FMB and HR 2 to the diesel models D 2016, D 5506, D 6007 and D 9506. Heinrich Lanz founded his company in Mannheim, where the Bulldog was built from 1921: a tractor with a horizontal single-cylinder hot-bulb engine that needed no spark plug and was started on petrol before it could be switched to cheaper fuels such as paraffin, crude oil or gas oil. This multi-fuel ability made the Bulldog popular on farms worldwide before Lanz moved to water-cooled diesel engines in the post-war years. In 1956 John Deere took a majority stake in Lanz, and by 1960 the brand name had disappeared from the new-machine range.

The register lists here 6 versions with 16.1 to 18.3 kW from one- to four-cylinder engines running at 500 to 680 revolutions per minute, unladen weights from 1,190 to 3,950 kg, lengths from 2,745 to 3,650 mm and heights from 1,850 to 2,270 mm; fuels range from petrol to paraffin, crude oil and gas oil.

The Lanz Bulldog counts among the defining designs of German agricultural-machinery history: robust, easy to repair and frugal on fuel, it became the standard farm tractor of the inter-war and post-war years and was also built under licence outside Germany.

On used examples, the condition of the hot bulb and cylinder, the cooling-water circuit and radiator, the clutch and gearbox, and the running gear and tyres all matter; spare parts today run mainly through specialist Bulldog clubs and tractor dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
