Heinrich Lanz D 7006 (HNO): water-cooled single-cylinder wood-fired tractor with 7,274 cc, 18.3 kW and 2,360 kg from the years 1943 to 1945
Heinrich Lanz was a tractor manufacturer based in Mannheim, whose single-cylinder hot-bulb engines, sold under the "Bulldog" name, could run on a range of different fuels. The HNO series was built in the final years of the war, when mineral oil in Germany was rationed and agricultural machinery was converted to domestic fuels.

The D 7006 is powered by a water-cooled single-cylinder engine of 7,274 cc, producing 25 hp, or 18.3 kW, at 850 rpm, and runs on wood. At a weight of 2,360 kg, a length of 3,320 mm, a height of 2,060 mm, a width of 1,600 mm and a wheelbase of 1,690 mm, the machine reaches a top speed of 15.1 km/h.
The switch to wood as a fuel was a wartime measure: the engine burned solid domestic fuel instead of mineral oil or diesel, which limited output and smoothness compared with the oil-fired original, but kept motorised pulling power available to agriculture independent of imports. The design's low top speed of just over 15 km/h was more than adequate for field work.
When buying such an old wartime tractor, the condition of the cylinder and piston matters most, since wood-fired engines wore faster than oil-fired ones due to deposits. Also worth checking are the radiator and water pump for leaks, the gearbox for noise, and the frame for rust; spare parts for this rare wartime series are now practically only available from collectors.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
