The Robust line was Hanomag's heavy standard-tractor programme, built by the Hannoversche Maschinenbau AG through the 1950s and 1960s. Alongside tractors, Hanomag also built trucks and construction machinery in Hanover; in 1971 the group sold its farm-machinery division to Massey Ferguson, which continued production at the site for a few more years. The Robust models from 800 to 1200 are named by ascending frame size, and the A suffix denotes a four-wheel-drive version.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the Robust tractors ranked among the heavy standard tractors for large German farms and competed with Lanz, Fendt and the big international makes; after Hanomag's independent farm-machinery business ended, its engineering partly lived on in Massey Ferguson models.
