Hanomag, the Hannoversche Maschinenbau AG, built the smaller 'C' range alongside its better-known R16 and R19 models as simple standard tractors for smaller farms and specialty crops. The type designation combines the letter C with a three-digit number whose first digit marks the range's generation – the ones (C112, C115) are the lightest, the twos (C218, C220, C224) a somewhat stronger version; the 'Greif' name suffix on the C115 denotes a particular equipment variant. The small models are driven by single-cylinder, the larger by twin-cylinder diesel engines.

The C range occupied the lower market segment in the 1950s alongside Hanomag's larger tractors, in direct competition with the small tractors of Fendt, Eicher and Holder, which in the same decade drove the mechanisation of smaller farms. With the sale of Hanomag's tractor division to Massey Ferguson in 1971, the independent range ended.
On used tractors, operating hours, the condition of injection pump and piston rings on the often air-cooled engines, clutch and gearbox, rust on sheet-metal parts, and linkage and PTO count; spare parts for the small Hanomag models are scarce and run almost exclusively through vintage-tractor specialists.
