Greaves Farymann – other nonroad diesel engines: vertical and horizontal single-cylinder small diesels of the 18 and 43 series from 4 to 10 kW, Tier 4, model years 2011/2012
Greaves Farymann is the trading name of Farymann Diesel GmbH, based in Lampertheim, which has for decades built small vertical and horizontal single-cylinder diesel engines and has carried this dual name since being taken over by the Indian Greaves Cotton group. This page gathers models of the 18 and 43 series that the register could not assign to a named series: 18D and 18W as vertical and horizontal versions, 43F and 43W likewise in both configurations.

The register lists here 4 versions with 4 to 10 kW rated output at 3,000 to 3,600 rpm, built as single-cylinder engines with 82 to 95 mm bore and 55 to 100 mm stroke. The fuel system entered throughout is direct injection, the fuel is low-sulphur diesel at 300 to 500 ppm sulphur content. The emission level ranges from Tier 4 (Final or Phase-in) to Interim Tier 4, model years lie between 2011 and 2012, maximum torque runs from 12.3 to 32.8 Nm.
The vertical and horizontal layout of the same engine size allows fitment into different equipment: vertical-shaft engines in pumps and compressors, horizontal-shaft engines in lawnmowers, generators and small construction machinery. With this dual layout, Greaves Farymann continues a classic segment of German small-diesel manufacturing, now carried on under Indian corporate ownership.
On a used example, what matters is the condition of the injector, compression, the tightness of the crankcase and oil sump and, on vertical versions, the shaft seal. Spare parts are supplied through Farymann's own distribution and the open trade for small diesel engines.

What to check before buying
- Match the data plate against the order: frame size, mounting and rating have to agree.
- For used units, ask about winding condition and bearing play.
- Ask about parts availability for this series — the running costs hang on it.
