GMC Safari – the van companion to the Chevrolet Astro in the GMC line-up: V6 engines from 2,996 to 5,001 cm³, unladen weights from 1,819 to 2,093 kg, length around 4,500 mm

The GMC Safari is the badge-engineered twin of the Chevrolet Astro, which General Motors built from 1985 to 2005 at its Baltimore plant. Unlike most rivals of its time, it used a ladder-frame construction with rear- or optional four-wheel drive instead of a unibody with front-wheel drive, which technically placed it closer to a pickup than a classic van.

The register lists here 6 versions with up to 83 kW from V6 engines of 2,996 to 5,001 cm³, unladen weights from 1,819 to 2,093 kg, gross weights from 2,400 to 2,767 kg, a length around 4,500 mm and widths from 1,900 to 2,040 mm.

The Safari met demand in North America for a van with pickup-level ruggedness and towing capacity and was sold in both passenger and cargo versions; in Europe it remained a niche vehicle with limited import volumes. In North America it remained a fixture with tradespeople, government fleets and fleet operators until production ended in 2005, valued for its towing capacity and simple mechanicals.

On a used example, the condition of the transfer case and driveshaft on four-wheel-drive versions, rust on the frame and rear wheel arches, wear on the distributor and intake manifold gaskets of the V6, and the function of the air conditioning and power sliding doors count; spare parts run through the GM network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
