Gehl of West Bend, Wisconsin, founded in 1859 as a farm-machinery works, built telehandlers for American building construction and agriculture from the 1980s and has belonged since 2008 to the French Manitou group, which continues the brand alongside Mustang as its US arm. The type logic follows the American convention: DL stands for Dynalift, the classic range, RS for the later range, CT for the compact telehandlers; the first number gives the capacity in thousands of pounds, the second the lift height in feet – a DL7-44 lifts 7,000 lb to 44 ft, a DL12-40 12,000 lb to 40 ft, an RS5-19 5,000 lb to 19 ft, a CT5-16 5,000 lb to 16 ft. The older 6H, 6L and 8H are the forerunners of the 1980s, Turbo and Low Profile mark engine and height variants.

Gehl's telehandlers are the machines of American masonry and drywall sites: lifting pallets onto scaffolds and floor slabs, side-shifting with the carriage – the tie-up with Manitou brought European hydraulics into the American design.
