Galloper 2.5 – the collective page of the Hyundai off-roader built under Mitsubishi licence: 2.5-litre turbodiesel of about 73 kW, unladen weight of 1,615 to 1,960 kg, Pajero sister registered as an N1 commercial vehicle

The Hyundai Galloper was an off-roader Hyundai built from 1991 to 2003 under licence from Mitsubishi on the basis of the first-generation Pajero, chiefly for the Spanish and Latin American markets. It was powered among others by the 2.5-litre 4D56 turbodiesel from the Mitsubishi range; LWB in the model names on this page denotes the long wheelbase, other codes trim and body variants. Because of its car-like body with a high payload, the Galloper is listed as a light commercial vehicle of class N1 rather than a passenger car in several vehicle registers.

The register lists here 7 versions with about 73 kW from the 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel (2,476 cm³), unladen weights from 1,615 to 1,960 kg, gross weights from 2,510 to 2,550 kg and widths from 1,680 to 1,770 mm.

The Galloper was Hyundai's entry into the European off-roader market and helped the brand gain a foothold in Spain and Latin America alongside established Mitsubishi, Nissan and Toyota off-roaders, before Hyundai brought its own designs, the Santa Fe and Terracan.

On a used Galloper, rust on the frame and sills, the condition of the 4D56 turbodiesel and injection pump, the transfer case and front-axle freewheeling hubs, and the seals on the driver's door and tailgate count; parts run largely through the Mitsubishi network, since the drivetrain and many body parts are shared with the identical Pajero.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
