The 64-15G comes from FWD. Production: 1974. The engine has 6 cylinders. The machine is 2,490 mm wide. The unladen weight is 20,156 kg. The wheelbase measures 4,300 mm. The gross vehicle weight is 20,450 kg. The machine runs on 6 wheels. Unladen weight across the FWD range ranges from 11 to 43,000 kg; the 64-15G sits in the middle of that range with 20,156 kg. Its immediate neighbours are the 64-12 CRANCE CARNIER below it with 16,536 kg and the --- above it with 21,260 kg. Gross vehicle weight across the FWD range ranges from 6,605 to 45,600 kg; here the 64-15G sits in the lower part of that range with 20,450 kg. 17 FWD models across 8 series are on record.

FWD – other models: the collective page of US off-road trucks and special chassis outside the named ranges, tipper, crane and fire-appliance chassis, 5,930 to 43,000 kg unladen weight, six-cylinder engines

FWD was founded in 1909 as the Four Wheel Drive Auto Company in Clintonville, Wisconsin, and was one of the first makers of series-production four-wheel-drive chassis for heavy trucks. Out of the military business of both world wars grew a civilian range of tipper, crane and fire-appliance chassis for construction, mining and municipal use; through the later takeover of the fire-apparatus maker Seagrave, the name lives on in fire-engine building today. This page gathers the FWD types the register could not assign to its own range.

The register lists here 10 versions with unladen weights from 5,930 to 43,000 kg and gross weights from 6,605 to 45,600 kg; widths range from 2,320 to 3,000 mm, and the recorded engines are all six-cylinder.

FWD chassis stood for off-road capability and high payload in North America and were used chiefly as the base for tippers, mobile cranes and fire engines rather than as series trucks for long-haul transport. Civilian truck production ended in the 1980s, while the fire-apparatus division continues under the Seagrave name.

On these historic four-wheel-drive chassis, the condition of the transfer case, portal axles and drive shafts, corrosion on the frame and crane booms, and the tightness of the hydraulic tipping systems all matter; many parts have been available only second-hand or as reproductions since production ended, and for fire-appliance bodies their technical inspection status is decisive as well.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
