The ZT303 is powered by a water-cooled diesel engine producing 90 hp, or 67 kW. This makes the machine one of the more powerful tractors in East German agricultural machinery of its time, built for farms with greater power needs.
A diesel tractor of this power class was built for primary tillage with a plough and cultivator on the larger agricultural areas farmed by East Germany's agricultural production cooperatives, as well as for driving harvesting machinery through the power take-off and for heavy trailer work. At around 67 kW, the machine clearly exceeds the power range of the smaller yard tractors of the same period, placing it among the larger field tractors built for cooperative-scale farming.
When buying such an old Fortschritt tractor secondhand, the condition of the diesel engine's injection pump and injectors, and the cooling system given the machine's age, matter most.
