The compression ratio is 16.3:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,800 rpm. The gearbox offers 16 forward gears. There are also 4 reverse gears. Injection pressure is 205 bar. The linkage is category II. The TW-Baureihe series covers 3 models. Rated output within it ranges from 117 to 132 hp; the TW-5 sits at the bottom of that range with 117 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the TW-10 (A) above it with 127 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 5,836 to 6,085 kg; here the TW-5 sits in the upper part of that range with 6,010 kg. 5516 Ford models across 101 series are on record.

Ford TW series – the large tractors from Basildon and Antwerp, 1979 to 1990, six-cylinder engines of 6,582 cc, 86 to 97 kW, up to 511 Nm torque

The Ford TW series began in 1979 as Ford Tractor Operations' large-tractor programme and was built until 1990 at Basildon in England and at Ford's plant in Antwerp, Belgium, before the successor Ford New Holland 40 series took over. The register lists the TW-5, TW-10 and TW-15 types here, from the lower and middle output range of the series, which extended upward to the TW-35; the TW-10 is additionally listed as a four-wheel-drive version (A). All three models share a six-cylinder diesel engine of 6,582 cc, which reached different power levels across the series depending on turbocharging and tuning.

The register lists 3 versions here with 86.1 to 97.1 kW from the common six-cylinder of 6,582 cc, torque of 415 to 511 Nm at 2,200 to 2,300 rpm, kerb weights of 5,836 to 6,085 kg, a gross weight of up to 10,470 kg, lengths of 4,140 to 4,586 mm, widths of 2,123 to 2,200 mm and heights of 2,865 to 2,950 mm; PTO output is 120 hp.

The TW series placed Ford in the large-tractor segment against competitors such as Case IH and Deutz-Fahr, and against its own Versatile subsidiary, which fitted the same six-cylinder engine in parallel into its articulated FW models. In Europe and North America, TW tractors were used chiefly in mixed farming and contracting, where the robust drivetrain and comparatively simple hydraulics were valued.

When buying a used TW, the key points are the condition of the clutch and gearbox, as the series' mechanical transmissions wear under high drawbar loads, plus seals and turbocharger of the six-cylinder engine, the hydraulic pump and lines, and corrosion on mudguards and cab; engine and drivetrain parts remain available through New Holland parts channels, as the series is technically related to later Ford and New Holland ranges.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
