Ford F-150 – America's best-selling pickup since 1975 as part of the F-Series: V6 and V8 engines from 2.7 to 7.5 litres, XL to Platinum trim lines, SVT Lightning special model

The F-150 has been the mid-weight class within Ford's F-Series, which began back in 1948, since 1975, and has for decades been the best-selling vehicle in the United States. It sits between the earlier F-100/F-250 territory and the heavy Super Duty models, and is offered in trim lines from XL through XLT and Lariat up to King Ranch and Platinum; the SVT Lightning special model of the 1990s and early 2000s was a high-performance version. Up until the late 1990s a 7.5-litre big-block V8 (460 cui) was available, after which smaller, more efficient V6 and V8 engines have dominated.

The register lists 141 versions with power outputs from 95 to 306 kW, displacements from 2,689 to 7,540 cm³ and six to eight cylinders. Unladen weights range from 1,564 to 3,005 kg, permissible gross weights from 2,267 to 3,500 kg, widths from 1,890 to 2,460 mm; length figures are only recorded for a smaller share of the models.

As the core model of the US pickup market, the F-150 competes with the Chevrolet Silverado and the Ram 1500, and has shaped the image of trade, recreational and family vehicles in North America for decades.

On used examples, important points are rust on the ladder frame, especially on vehicles imported from road-salt regions, the condition of the automatic transmission and transfer case on 4x4 versions, the ignition coils and injectors on V8 engines, corrosion on the load bed, and the availability of spare parts outside North America, which is limited for vehicles imported into Europe.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
