Ford EML – the collective page of Ford Transit registrations under the EML designation, including camper conversions, 2.5-litre displacement, four-cylinder, 2.4 to 3.1 tonnes unladen weight, up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight

Ford EML is a Dutch registration designation for the second- and third-generation Ford Transit of the 1980s and 1990s, whose chassis also served as the base for motorhome conversions – visible in the entries as Kampeerauto and Kampeerwagen, the Dutch terms for motorhome. The model name EML/Transit 190 shows the origin from the Transit range, in which the number marked the payload and weight class within the modular system. The Ford Transit was built from 1965 in Genk, Belgium, and in Britain, and was Europe's best-selling light commercial vehicle for decades; the 2.5-litre indirect-injection diesel was among the standard engines of this generation.

The register lists here 9 versions of 2.5-litre displacement from four-cylinders, unladen weights from 2,353 to 3,050 kg, gross weights from 2,900 to 3,500 kg and widths from 2,160 to 2,400 mm.

This generation of Transit was a common base vehicle in the Netherlands both for trade businesses and for motorhome converters who built compact camper bodies on the sturdy chassis; the Kampeerauto and Kampeerwagen entries recorded here document this second line of use.

On used examples of this Transit generation, rust on wheel arches, sliding door and floor pan, the condition of the indirect-injection pump and glow plugs count, and on the motorhome conversions damp in the body and the condition of the gas system and furniture; drivetrain parts run through the open Ford parts trade.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
