Ford Dexta – the small three-cylinder diesel from Dagenham that complemented the Major range: 25 to 34 kW, 2,590 to 2,830 cm³, unladen weight 1,525 to 1,955 kg
From 1957 the Dexta complemented the larger Major range from below at Ford's Dagenham plant near London and was the company's first small standard tractor of the post-war years. Ford developed a dedicated three-cylinder diesel engine for it together with Perkins, lighter and more compact than the four-cylinders of the big range; in 1962 the Super Dexta with a stronger engine replaced the original model. The name follows Ford's practice of the time of giving its smaller ranges short, standalone names instead of number combinations.

The register lists here 5 versions with 25 to 34 kW from three-cylinders of 2,590 to 2,830 cm³ displacement, unladen weights from 1,525 to 1,955 kg, a gross weight of 1,840 kg, lengths from 3,210 to 3,250 mm and widths from 1,630 to 2,250 mm.
In Britain and its export markets the Dexta was the entry-level tractor for smaller farms and part-time farmers, while the Major served medium and larger holdings; its compact build also made it attractive for orchard work and cramped yards.
On a used Dexta, the condition of the three-cylinder's cylinder head and injection pump, the clutch and gearbox, the three-point hydraulics and rust on the wings and bonnet all matter; spare parts for the engine and running gear remain well supplied through the active British vintage-tractor market.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
