From 1957 the Dexta complemented the larger Major range from below at Ford's Dagenham plant near London and was the company's first small standard tractor of the post-war years. Ford developed a dedicated three-cylinder diesel engine for it together with Perkins, lighter and more compact than the four-cylinders of the big range; in 1962 the Super Dexta with a stronger engine replaced the original model. The name follows Ford's practice of the time of giving its smaller ranges short, standalone names instead of number combinations.
