When buying a used open-platform Ford, checks should cover corrosion on the load area and bed edges, the condition of the rear leaf springs, and, on diesel versions, the injection pump and turbocharger. The clutch and gearbox should be tested for wear, and on the larger eight-cylinder versions the cooling and ignition systems should also be checked.
