Ford New Holland 5640 to 8340 (1991-2000) – the '40 series' from Basildon after the Fiat takeover: the last digit as size class, four- and six-cylinder, 55 to 88 kW, 274 to 469 Nm

After Fiat took over Ford Tractor Operations in 1991 and merged it with its own farm-equipment arm into New Holland, the British Basildon tractors initially ran under the dual Ford New Holland badge before the Ford name disappeared in the late 1990s. The '40 series' (5640, 6640, 6740, 7740, 7840, 8240, 8340) replaced the previous 'Ten Series'; the last two digits order the size class in ascending order, the second-to-last the engine size, and 'SLE' and 'DT' marked comfort and four-wheel-drive versions. The smaller models run four-cylinder, the larger six-cylinder engines from the same engine family.

The register lists 5 versions with engines of 4,388 to 7,478 cm³, outputs of 55.2 to 88.3 kW, torque of 274 to 469 Nm and rated speeds of 2,070 to 2,170 rpm. Service weights range from 3,687 to 4,460 kg, lengths from 4,058 to 4,478 mm.

The 40 series was New Holland's best-selling mid-size field tractor in Europe during the 1990s, with engines related to Deutz and Iveco units from the CNH group, competing directly with the John Deere 6000 series and Massey Ferguson 6100. From 1999 the TS range succeeded this generation.

On used tractors, operating hours, the condition of clutch and powershift stages, hydraulic pump and linkage, front-drive hub and axle bearings, and rust on cab and wings count; parts supply runs without problems through New Holland's dense dealer network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
