Ford New Holland 30 series (1990–1995) – the last Ford tractors from Basildon and Antwerp: 3230 to 5030 and 8730, the first digits as size class, 30 as series, A for four-wheel drive, three

The 30 series was the last tractor generation Ford New Holland built under the Ford name in Basildon, England, and Antwerp, Belgium – after Fiat bought the group in 1991 the tractors continued in Ford blue until 1995 before passing into the 35 and 40 series under the New Holland name. The type logic: the first digits order the size in ascending order – 3230 and 3930 the three-cylinders of the 40 to 50 hp class, 4130 to 5030 the four-cylinders up to about 70 hp, 8730 the six-cylinder with about 155 hp from the 30 series of big tractors – 30 marks the series succeeding the 10 series, A four-wheel drive. The engines are Ford's own diesels from Basildon: the three-cylinder of 3.1 and 3.3 litres, the four-cylinder of 4.2 litres and the six-cylinder of 6.6 litres, at 1,970 to 2,200 rpm – the range Ford had developed since the 1960s and which continued as Genesis in the 70s.

The register lists 7 versions with 27.2 to 113.3 kW from three- to six-cylinders of 3,142 to 6,582 cm³, torque from 153 to 525 Nm, unladen weights from 2,437 to 6,740 kg, lengths from 3,521 to 4,913 mm, widths from 1,735 to 2,655 mm and heights from 2,248 to 2,898 mm.

The 3930 and 4630 are still the typical tractors of small farms and horse yards in Britain, Ireland and North America today – simple, with mechanical injection and synchromesh gearbox; in North America they were sold in Ford blue until the end of the 1990s.

On used tractors, operating hours, engine condition and injection pump, clutch and gearbox (Synchro or Dual Power), four-wheel-drive clutch on A models, hydraulics and sheet metal count; parts run through New Holland and are widely available.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
