Rated speed is 2,300 rpm. The machine is 3,767 mm long, 2,159 mm wide and 1,880 mm high. The unladen weight is 4,526 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,324 mm. Ground clearance is 643 mm. Top speed is 30 km/h. The tank holds 162.8 litres. Transmission: 8 V/2 R or 16 V/4 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 7.50-18 ASF (RC: 7.50-16 ASF), rear 18.4-34 AS (RC: 16.9-34 AS). The model was built in USA. The fuel is diesel. PTO output is 105 hp. The compression ratio is 16.5:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,400 rpm. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). Injection pressure is 192 bar. The linkage is category II. The 1.000 er-Baureihe series covers 12 models. Rated output within it ranges from 36 to 147 hp; the 8000 sits in the upper part of that range with 110 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 9500 below it with 95 hp and the 8600 (A) above it with 118 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 1,369 to 6,270 kg; here the 8000 sits in the upper part of that range with 4,526 kg. 5516 Ford models across 101 series are on record.

Ford 1000 series (1965–1975) – 2000 to 9600: the worldwide Ford range from Basildon, Antwerp and Highland Park, the number as size class, blue-grey as the new colour, 26 to 108 kW

In 1965 Ford unified its tractor programme worldwide: the English Fordson models Dexta and Major and the American Ford tractors were replaced by a common range built in Basildon, Antwerp and Highland Park, which ended the Fordson era. The type logic orders size in steps of a thousand: 2000 the three-cylinder small tractor, 3000 the successor to the Dexta, 4000 the mid-range, 5000 the successor to the Major with four-cylinder, 6000, 8000 and 9000 the American six-cylinder large tractors; 8600 and 9600 are the revisions of 1973. Suffixes such as 6X/6Y denote design types, (A) four-wheel drive, Super Dexta the transitional type. With the range came the blue-grey livery of 1965 that Ford kept until the merger with New Holland in 1991.

The register lists 12 versions with 26.3 to 108.1 kW (36 to 147 hp), 2,190 to 6,578 cm³ with three to six cylinders, torque from 164 to 504 Nm, unladen weights from 1,369 to 6,270 kg, lengths from 3,069 to 4,040 mm, widths from 1,130 to 2,314 mm and heights from 1,350 to 2,972 mm; eight models run on diesel, the rest optionally on petrol or LPG.

With its 4.2-litre four-cylinder the Ford 5000 became Britain's best-selling tractor and the pattern of the 65 hp class; the 3000 and 4000 were the standard tractors of all Western Europe, which is why parts are still available everywhere today.

On used tractors, engine condition, the transmission (the Select-O-Speed powershift is the known weak point), hydraulics and front axle count; the club scene and remanufacturers secure supply.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
