Fliegl SZS – semi-trailers for round and square bales: unladen weight 3,630 to 11,140 kg, gross vehicle weight 30 to 38 tonnes, lengths up to 14,050 mm

Fliegl Agrartechnik, headquartered in Mühldorf am Inn, is the agricultural-machinery arm of the Fliegl Group, which also includes Fliegl Fahrzeugbau, based in Triptis and specialising in commercial-vehicle trailers; the Mühldorf plant opened in 2013 and is now the main site of the agricultural-technology division. The SZS range covers semi-trailers for transporting round and square bales, such as straw or hay bales, as in the models SZS 300 and SZS 330.

The register lists 10 versions of the SZS range with unladen weights from 3,630 to 11,140 kg and gross vehicle weights from 30,000 to 38,000 kg. Lengths run from 9,920 to 14,050 mm, widths from 2,420 to 2,600 mm.

The considerable lengths of over 14 metres reflect the shape of the load: bales are stacked in several layers and long rows to make the most of the permitted payload in as few trips as possible. SZS semi-trailers are common in the logistics of harvesting straw, hay and silage and are often secured with side stakes or nets to stop the bales falling off.

On a used bale semi-trailer, the condition of the load floor and stakes, corrosion on the frame and underbody from moisture in the load, and the function of any net or tarpaulin system all matter. The axles, braking system, suspension and kingpin belong in the check, as does the date of the last roadworthiness inspection and, on long vehicles, the function of any loading ramp.

What to check before buying

  • Search the frame and welds at the axle mounts — that is where cracks start.
  • Check the brakes and the last inspection in the papers.
  • Work the gross weight against the towing vehicle before buying.
  • Compare the chassis number with the papers.
  • Look at the floor, cover or body from the inside — rust does not show from outside.
