The stroke is 115 mm. The compression ratio is 17:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,500 rpm. Construction: frame construction. Injection pressure is 230 bar. The 66er S-Baureihe series covers 8 models. Rated output within it ranges from 45 to 80 hp; the 55-66 S (DT) sits in the lower part of that range with 55 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 50-66 S (DT) below it with 50 hp and the 60-66 S (DT) above it with 60 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 1,960 to 2,815 kg; here the 55-66 S (DT) sits in the upper part of that range with 2,635 kg. 137 Fiatagri models across 14 series are on record.

Fiatagri 66 S series (1980s) – the second edition of the 66s from Turin: 45-66 to 80-66 S, the first number as hp class, S for the revised series, DT for four-wheel drive

The 66 range was Fiat's mid-range of the 1980s and one of Italy's most-built tractors; the S version is its second edition with new bonnet, revised cab and stronger hydraulics, which Fiatagri – since 1984 the group's farm-machinery brand – introduced in the second half of the decade. The type logic is the Fiat convention: the first number gives the hp class – 45-66 about 45 hp, 60-66 60 hp, 80-66 about 80 hp – 66 the series, S the revised version, DT four-wheel drive (doppia trazione). The engines are the 8000 series from Turin: the three-cylinder 8035 of 2.7 litres in the small, the four-cylinder 8045 of 3.9 litres in the big models, at 2,500 rpm – the same engines that later continued in the New Holland TN and TL.

The register lists 8 versions with 33.1 to 58.9 kW from three- and four-cylinders of 2,710 to 3,908 cm³, torque from 145 to 224 Nm, unladen weights from 1,960 to 2,815 kg, lengths from 3,240 to 3,920 mm, widths from 1,540 to 2,420 mm and heights from 2,245 to 2,560 mm.

The 66 S are still at work in Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey and North Africa today – simple mechanical tractors whose design Fiat also had built under licence in Turkey (Türk Traktör) and India.

On used tractors, operating hours, clutch and gearbox, four-wheel-drive front axle on DT models, the condition of hydraulics and cab and parts supply, unproblematic through New Holland for the 8000 series, are what count.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
