McCormick-Deering Farmall series: the letter tractors A, B, H and M and the early F-12, 16 to 37 hp, International four-cylinders in petrol, diesel and kerosene versions from the 1930s
The Farmall was International Harvester's first mass-produced general-purpose tractor in 1923, with a tricycle front end for row-crop work, and carried the McCormick-Deering name into the 1940s, after the two founding companies merged into International Harvester in 1902: the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and the Deering Harvester Company. The F-12 of 1932 belongs to the early F series that preceded the letter series introduced in 1939, which used A, B, H and M to mark the company's small to mid-size general-purpose tractors; MD denotes the diesel version of the M, and MV and MDV the raised, narrow-track versions for vineyards and row crops. The engines come throughout from International Harvester itself, in the C-113, C-152, C-248 and D-248 series, where the number gives the displacement in cubic inches and C marks petrol, D diesel versions.

The register lists here 9 versions with 16 to 37 hp, all four-cylinder, rated speeds from 1,400 to 1,650 rpm; petrol, diesel and kerosene (distillate) sit side by side as fuels.
The Farmall is regarded as the most influential American general-purpose tractor of the interwar period, and its row-crop front end shaped the design of numerous rivals such as the John Deere Model A/B, the Allis-Chalmers WC and the Ford-Ferguson 9N; today the letter-series Farmalls are sought-after collector tractors.
On these historic tractors, originality of paint and lettering, the condition of the magneto ignition and carburettor, the engine block for cracks, the condition of steel or retrofitted rubber wheels, and gearbox and clutch count; parts run through specialist vintage-vehicle dealers and the aftermarket for historic International tractors.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
