The Eicher 4038 is a model in the 4000 serie ( Phase III ) series. Production: 1978–1982. The engine delivers 38 hp (27.8 kW), has 3 cylinders, with a displacement of 2,500 cm³. Torque is 155 Nm. Rated speed is 2,150 rpm. The machine is 3,485 mm long, 1,610 mm wide and 2,230 mm high. The unladen weight is 2,170 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,113 mm. Ground clearance is 370 mm. Top speed is 25 km/h. The tank holds 85 litres. Transmission: 8V/2R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 6.50-16, rear 12.4-28. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 91.4 mm. The stroke is 127 mm. Maximum torque is reached at 1,403 rpm. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). The gearbox offers 8 forward gears. There are also 2 reverse gears. The linkage is category I. Around 640 units were built. Rated output across the Eicher range ranges from 11 to 145 hp; the 4038 sits in the lower part of that range with 38 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the EM 300 Königstiger below it with 35 hp and the EA 400 above it with 40 hp. Rated output across the Eicher range ranges from 13 to 133 hp; here the 4038 sits in the lower part of that range with 38 hp. 196 Eicher models across 41 series are on record.

Eicher 4038 (4000 range, Phase III, 1978–1982): water-cooled three-cylinder diesel with 2,500 cm³, 27.8 kW and 155 Nm of torque

Within the 4000 range from the Phase III period, Eicher, the Bavarian tractor manufacturer, also offered a smaller three-cylinder version in the 4038. The model was built from 1978 to 1982. This smaller three-cylinder version rounded out the 4000 range from below, alongside the larger four- and six-cylinder versions.

The Eicher 4038 carries a water-cooled three-cylinder diesel engine with 2,500 cm³ of displacement, producing 38 hp, or 27.8 kW, at 2,150 rpm, and developing 155 Nm of torque. At 2,170 kg, 3,485 mm long, 2,230 mm high, 1,610 mm wide and with a 2,113 mm wheelbase, the machine reaches a top speed of 25 km/h.

At 27.8 kW, the 4038 is the least powerful of the 4000-range versions considered here and was intended for smaller and medium farms that did not need a large-displacement tractor for lighter field work, grassland care and haulage. Despite the smaller 2,500 cm³ displacement, its 155 Nm of torque is solid for this power class. Such a smaller tractor was often a farm's first piece of mechanisation, replacing horses or much older equipment.

When buying this smaller three-cylinder engine used, the condition of the injection pump and clutch matters, as these can be heavily worn after decades of work on smaller farms. Also worth checking are the tightness of the cooling system and corrosion damage to the frame and mudguards, widespread on tractors of this build era.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
