DJI N3

Series: DJI Autopilots for drones

The DJI N3 is a flight controller for self-built mid-size multicopters with a dual-redundant IMU. The system consists of the main control unit, a GPS module, a power management unit (PMU) and an LED unit.

The closed DJI firmware serves as software. Two IMUs make it possible to switch over when readings differ, and one barometer measures altitude. The power management unit handles battery voltages from 3S to 12S, so the board itself is not run directly from the battery. The control unit measures 57.9 × 39 × 17 mm and weighs 46 g; the complete system with GPS (37 g), PMU (36 g) and LED (13 g) comes to 132 g. The last published software dates from 2019.

The manufacturer is based in China; anyone supplying US federal authorities observes the NDAA procurement rules for flight controllers from Chinese manufacturers. In the EU the finished drone determines class and duties such as Remote ID.

The system is manufacturer-bound: ready integration, but little freedom in payload and ground station. When selecting, plan with the 132 g of the complete system rather than the 46 g of the control unit, and check whether the software version from 2019 fits your own tools and accessories. Wear sits in the GPS and PMU connectors; vibration damages the IMUs, so damping and calibration after every modification are part of the job.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
