Discovery Energy (Rehlko) LDW 1003 — the Lombardini/Kohler Three-Cylinder for Compact Equipment
The LDW 1003 is a water-cooled three-cylinder diesel with a belt-driven overhead camshaft; a factory figure lists output around 20.5 kW (28 hp). Typical applications include compact tractors, aerial platforms, concrete mixers, compact loaders, dumpers, farm machinery, generators and welders.

The engine line originates with the Italian manufacturer Lombardini, acquired by Kohler in 2007, after which it was sold as the Kohler KDW1003/LDW1003. In May 2024 Kohler's engine and energy business was spun off as a standalone company (majority owner Platinum Equity, legal entity "Discovery Energy"), and in September 2024 the brand was renamed Rehlko.
The LDW 1003 appears across a wide range of compact mobile and stationary machinery, from agricultural equipment through construction gear to generator sets — a small diesel where compactness and a broad accessory program matter more than raw power per liter.
On a used unit, the exact variant code (e.g. B1/B4/E4/R/GE) is the key thing to check, since it denotes different injection, cooling and generator-interface configurations; matching the nameplate against the parts catalog helps avoid buying the wrong version.

What to check before buying
- Match the data plate against the order: frame size, mounting and rating have to agree.
- For used units, ask about winding condition and bearing play.
- Ask about parts availability for this series — the running costs hang on it.
